Automakers in Japan rolled out 731,794 vehicles at domestic plants in April, up 50.8 percent from a year before for the sixth consecutive monthly gain and the largest percentage rise for the month since the compilation of data began in 1966, an industry body said Monday.
The record increase, however, was the result of a steep fall in April 2009 amid the global financial crisis, with domestic production of passenger cars, trucks and buses actually declining 20.3 percent from the same month of 2008, according to the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association. The auto industry "remains in a severe state" and there are uncertainties down the road as the European economy is showing signs of a slowdown, a JAMA official said. The production of passengers cars in April increased 50.8 percent to 627,219 units, while that of trucks came to 94,884 units, up 46.8 percent for the biggest gain on record. The output of buses climbed 94.4 percent to 9,691 units. The association also said Japan's auto exports totaled 391,540 units in April, up 89.6 percent from a year earlier and the sharpest rise on record since 1972. But the volume of exports marked a plunge of 33.0 percent from April 2008
