German auto maker Volkswagen AG is considering setting up plants with China FAW Group and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp in South China's Guangdong Province to boost sales, sources reported.
The plant with FAW would mainly produce cars under the brands of Volkswagen and Audi, while the other would manufacture Volkswagen- and Skoda-brand cars. The two new facilities would start operation in 2013, and would each produce up to 200,000 per year. Further details may be revealed at the upcoming Beijing Auto Show, which starts in late April. VW has said that it aims to more than triple its annual vehicle sales in South China to 500,000 units from the current 150,000 units. VW only has 12% of the market in South China, which is one of the wealthiest and most developed markets in Asia.
