Statement Attributable To Beth Lowery, Vice President, Environment, Energy, And Safety Policy Re: National Seatbelt Usage Reaches A Record High. The seatbelt is the single most important safety feature in a car or truck. Achieving record high 84% seatbelt usage equals more lives saved and less injuries on our nation's roads this year. GM commends and supports the hard work of state and local law enforcement officers, NHTSA, and state and local traffic safety officials who have contributed to moving seatbelt usage significantly upward over the last 25 years. State legislators, governors, and Congress must also be recognized because upgraded seat belt laws, state incentives and highly visible campaigns like 'Click It or Ticket' are making a difference. GM believes even more lives can be saved and we encourage the remaining 20 states to pass primary enforcement seatbelt use laws and strengthen enforcement.
