Considering the multiplier-benefit arising out of the automobile projects, Tamil Nadu Government will endeavour to attract more projects.
"I have a dream to make Chennai one of the top ten centres for automobile manufacturing hub", said Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at the launch of Renault-Nissan Alliance car plant at Oragadam near Chennai on Wednesday. With this plant, Chennai has become the home for 7 auto majors out of top 20 global automobile manufacturers. The other majors located in TN are Daimler, Ford, BMW, Hyundai and Mitsubishi. Today, Chennai is emerging as Asia’s automobile capital. Establishment of these auto projects bears ample testimony to the favourable investment climate prevailing in TN, he said. The State with its investor-friendly policies, has been a fore- runner in attracting large number of domestic and foreign investors. Since May 2006 ( when DMK returned to power), the State signed 25 MoUs and issued orders for another 12 projects. Total investment in the 37 projects will be about Rs 46, 091 crore and they have a potential to create jobs for 2.22 lakh persons directly and indirectly, Mr Karunanidhi said. Though Chennai has become the largest auto hub of India, it was lacking the vehicle testing facilities. This has made auto manufacturers to send their vehicles to Pune for testing and certification. Based on the state government’s initiative, the centre is implementing a project through Natrip at Oragadam at a cost of about Rs 400 crore. The State Government has given 304 acres of land for the project. Appreciating Nissan for employing predominantly from the neighbouring villages and a number of CSR initiatives undertaken by it, the CM said, "I do expect that the big industrial houses in TN will take a lead and set an example to other industries for what a good corporate citizen can do."
