All season, Rockport Automotive has looked to be one of the teams to beat in the Midcoast Babe Ruth League.
Despite a minor stumble in their final game of the regular season where they fell to Wiscasset Ford, the team had been unbeaten all year and earned the No. 2 seed in the playoffs. And when they saw weary eighth-seeded Waldoboro, whom had just earned the right to face them a mere hour before and had to win three games this week just to advance, they kicked it into overdrive. Rockport Automotive sped past this year's Cinderella squad and put the exclamation point on a stellar season with a 10-0 win in five innings to clinch the league crown Saturday at Medomak Valley High School. Rockport Automotive (15-1) defeated No. 7 Newcastle 8-6 in Wednesday's quarterfinals and No. 6 Belfast 5-0 to advance to Saturday's title game, while Waldoboro (7-10) defeated No. 9 Georges Valley 4-1 in preliminary action Tuesday, upset top-seeded Wiscasset Ford 7-5 Wednesday and then defeated No. 5 Newcastle 10-9 in 11 innings in a game that began Thursday night and was suspended due to darkness, only to resume Saturday afternoon at MVHS. Leading the newly crowned Babe Ruth champs at the plate Saturday were Chandler Crans (single, walk, run), Kyle Crans (single, run, RBI), Caleb McFarland (single, run, RBI), Sean Pierce (singe, triple, 2 runs, RBI), Cailan Schecter (single, RBI), Sam Gimlewicz (2 singles, 2 runs, RBI), Ryan Pierce (single, walk, run), Nate Pascal (double, walk, run, 2 RBIs) and Isaac Filderman (run, RBI). For Waldoboro, Tim Farrar rapped two singles, while Micah Williamson and Tyler Emerson each had one base hit and Robbie Flint drew a walk. Chandler Crans tossed four innings on the hill for Rockport Automotive, allowing four hits and one walk, while striking out seven batters. Sean Pierce tossed a hitless fifth frame, fanning one batter. Williamson went the distance for Waldoboro, scattering 10 hits and two walks. Both teams went scoreless in the first inning, while Rockport Automotive got their acts in gear in the second to the tune of a seven-run frame, which began after Sean Pierce scored on a bunt from Gimlewicz to put them up 1-0. Gimlewicz later scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Filderman to push the lead to two runs. Later in the inning, Ryan Pierce came in to score on an RBI double by Pascal, who later scored along with teammate Chandler Crans on a two-run single by brother Kyle Crans, putting Rockport Automotive up 5-0. After Kyle Crans came around to score on an RBI single by McFarland, who promptly stole second base, McFarland came in on an RBI triple by Sean Pierce, putting Rockport Automotive up by seven runs. Rockport Automotive increased their lead to 8-0 in the third inning after Gimlewicz came in to score on a sacrifice bunt by Pascal, and pushed it to 9-0 after Sean Pierce scored on an RBI single by Schecter. Kyle Crans then knocked in what proved to be the game-winner with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Waldoboro advances to title game in dramatic fashion While Waldoboro came up short in its quest for a league title, they proved that the shoe certainly fit for the eighth-seeded Cinderella story as they earned the right to face Rockport Automotive with a 10-9 win in eleven innings over No. 5 Damariscotta Saturday — one hour before taking the field in the league championship. The semifinal game between Waldoboro and Damariscotta began Thursday and proved to be an exciting contest, which saw Waldoboro hold a 5-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh before "host" Damariscotta — the home team by virtue of seed despite playing the contest in Waldoboro — tied the game at 5-5, sending the game to extra innings. Waldoboro then took a 9-7 lead in the top of the ninth inning before Damariscotta again rallied to tie the score, forcing the umpires to suspend play due to darkness. Saturday, the game kicked off in the top of the 10th inning with Waldoboro up to bat. After a scoreless 10th inning for both squads, Waldoboro took a 10-9 lead after Ryan Ripley singled, stole second base and came around to score on an RBI single by Farrar. Waldoboro then held Damariscotta scoreless in the bottom of the frame, earning a berth in the upcoming title game. Leading Waldoboro at the plate were Robbie Flint (single, 3 runs), Kerry Madden (double), Ripley (2 singles, 2 runs), Tim Farrar (3 singles), Nick DePatsy (double, single, 2 runs), Tyler Emerson (2 singles) and Jackson Vail (2 singles). For Damariscotta, A.J. Oliver (double, 2 singles, run), A. McCullough (2 singles, 2 runs), N. Morton (double), S. Butterfield (3 singles, run) and M. Tomasello (2 singles). Robbie Flint went seven innings on the hill for Waldoboro, allowing seven hits and four walks, while striking out six. Ripley tossed four innings of relief —two Thursday and two more Saturday— allowing three hits and four walks, while fanning three.
