The first Detroit motor show to take place since the emergence from bankruptcy of General Motors and Chrysler is due to premiere 60 new models, including electric cars.
The Detroit show, which remains the most important motor show in the US, will concentrate on the electric, hybrid and fuel efficient models which the US car industry will show as it reinvents itself as a new automotive technology base. Small petrol-powered cars are also likely to be popular, with large cars losing their domination of the market. With regulatory requirements being tightened amidst the increasing focus on the importance of reducing carbon dioxide emissions, Chrysler is pinning its hopes on rebadged versions of Fiat cars, while GM will unveil its Chevrolet Spark city car. Ford will show off its new Focus, hot on the heels of its introduction of the smaller Fiesta at the Los Angeles motor show last month.
