This follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between NMMU’s Faculty of Engineering: the Built Environment and Information Technology and Mercedes-Benz SA (MBSA) to collaborate in a number of engineering-related areas. The collaboration will entail the sharing of knowledge and expertise, helping with the creation of a local centre of automotive expertise as well as accelerating of the introduction of competitive and appropriate technologies. The areas of collaboration are: Facilitating the transfer and diffusion of existing automotive technologies and learning; Facilitating co-operation between the parties and enterprises regarding the transfer and diffusion of these technologies; Engaging and interacting with relevant national and international stakeholders in their technology, training and development domain; and Other automotive technology-related activities. The university said this would be made possible by the recruitment and sponsorship of students in the engineering and automotive technology fields, the joint development and presentation of upskilling programmes for Mercedes-Benz employees, and facilitation of the recruitment and on-campus management of all students associated with MBSA. This process would be financially supported by MBSA through a lectureship sponsorship.
