Maruti 800, India's first economy car, is being sought by overseas market. The company has exported 4,435 Maruti 800 cars in August 2010 which is nearly a 2 times jump when compared against the 2,316 units in August 2009.

Maruti 800 domestic sales have declined from 12,649 units in August 2010 as against August 2009's sales of 10,505. This data was collected from Society of Indian Automobile
Manufacturers (SIAM) records.

Maruti Suzuki in India, stopped making efforts to upgrade Maruti 800's engine to comply with BS IV emission standards which was put into effect from April 1, 2010. This axed the car from selling in 13 major cities of our country including the metros.

Surprisingly, the recent rise in exports may not be a big business proposition of Maruti's total car numbers. But, if the exports grow, the company may have to keep producing this 26 years old car. Maruti 800 was introduced in 1983 for a mere Rs. 48000. So far, 28 lakh Maruti 800 cars are sold and 25 lakh cars are running in India.
