“I’m devastated. My entire family is devastated,” said Gabe Corona, adding that his son had a good business going—recycling machine parts for cash.
It was a business that gave struggling families in the nearby neighborhoods quick money for their recycled items. “He was a giving person, and he felt good about what he was doing,” said Corona. Seeing repeat customers wasn’t anything new to Corona and his workers. But not this time: employees tell police they recognized at least one of the men. They told police he entered the shop with another man, and once inside, the pair pulled guns and stole wallets, cell phones, and cash. Twenty-five year old Carlos Corona was shot and left to die. “He was just sitting there, closing out the end of the day. And these people stepped in and took his life,” said his father. Friends who knew Corona have stopped by the 3600 block of New Laredo Highway to leave flowers and signs of support, for a man whose business helped support so many. Ronnie Hernandez saw Corona just two days ago, when they shared a laugh. “And from one second to the next it can all be taken from you. It is unfortunate that people are greedy and envy, and they feel they have to take it from you because they don’t have it. And it shouldn’t be that way,” said Hernandez. “We just pray that justice is served in this, that what we want,” added his father. After a chase down Old Pearsall Road, police and deputies arrested Julian Sifuentes and Richard Rodriguez. Both men remain jailed on capital murder charges on bonds of more than a million dollars.
