Sponsored by Nissan, the Grand Prix was first organized in May 1984 by the International Institute for Children's Literature, Osaka, and now attracts more than 3,000 entries each year. The Grand Prix hopes to identify talented writers and illustrators of children's books, to offer them a platform to showcase their works. The Grand Prize winning works will be published, paving the way for several past Grand Prix winners to attain successful publishing careers.

As part of Nissan corporate contribution initiatives copies of the winning works will be published and distributed to libraries, kindergartens and nursery schools across Japan. Through the Grand Prix competition, Nissan hopes to promote children's literature and education, by bringing the joys of reading to children of all ages.

Nissan has been addressing a wide range of actions under "Blue Citizenship" which represents the company's desire to protect the blue planet and to be a corporate citizen that can live symbiotically with people and society. These efforts range from such global issues as the environmental protection to contribution to communities, promoting diversity and making personal mobility available to as many people as possible. "Nissan Children's Storybook and Picture Book Grand Prix" as part of educational support is one of such activities based on "Blue Citizenship".
