Dow Corning Corporation, a global leader in silicone and silicon-based technology and innovation, is helping a major brake manufacturer reduce noise from brake-pad clips with Molykote D-708 Anti-Friction Coating. The proven-effective dry-film lubricant is now identified by Tier 1 suppliers for use on disc-brake systems for several vehicle platforms.
“By reducing the coefficient of friction between brake-pad backing plates and retainer clips, Molykote D-708 Anti-Friction Coating solved a noise problem seen during caliper vibration tests,” said Matt Hagemeyer, a Dow Corning application engineer and technical service expert for Molykote brand lubricants. “Extensive testing of specially coated brake clips proved that less friction could resolve the noise issue, as well as reduce potential wear and roughness from inconsistent brake-pad movement.” According to Hagemeyer, the Tier 1 brake supplier to various global vehicle manufacturers preferred a “dry” lubricant instead of a “wet” grease or paste for the application. In addition to providing more precise friction control to reduce noise, a dry anti-friction coating (AFC) could also provide added brake-clip lubrication durability with high resistance to road contaminants, water washout, temperature extremes and possible oxidation. Collaborating with customer engineering, Dow Corning lubrication experts validated the superior performance of Molykote D-708 Anti-Friction Coating for reliable metal-to-metal lubrication between brake-pad backing plates and spring-loaded retainer clips. The AFC is applied by a coating specialist with a spray process and heat cured to a clean and slippery film of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) lubricating solids that control friction and noise. Now identified by Tier 1 suppliers for use on disc-brake systems on a number of different vehicles – both passenger cars and light-duty trucks – Molykote D-708 Anti-Friction Coating is providing the brake manufacturer with some key advantages, including controlled friction with less wear and potential noise, minimized roughness and uneven pad wear, durability across a wide service-temperature range, resistance to water washout, road contaminants and oxidation and cleaner assembly of brake-caliper components “Our Molykore brand Smart Lubrication meet the needs of today’s integrated braking systems, outperforming other choices which may not be specifically formulated for brake-system applications,” Hagemeyer added. “Dow Corning is One Company with many automotive solutions and we serve the industry with innovation, expertise and support.”
