As parts of efforts to know the database of all vehicles currently in the country, the National Automotive Council (NAC) has launched a website where all owners can visit to give necessary information about their vehicles Speaking at the launch in Abuja, the Director, Policy and Planning, NAC, Luqman Mamudu, said with the collation of the data of all automobiles in the country, it would help the council to plan for the people in terms of vehicular number and movements.
In his words: “The main thrust of the policy is to develop the Nigeria Automotive Industry, using local human and material resources. In order to do this, it needed to first take control of the existing industry and the entire automotive sector. “This is by obtaining relevant data on automotive plants, local automotive components, manufacturers, automotive repair and maintenance shops, automotive distributors and dealers, institutions, vehicles registered in Nigeria, automotive imports and others,” he said. The need for the registration, according to Mamudu, is for the development of policies and programmes, and to positively influence government decisions as may be required from time to time. It would also help generate critical market intelligence report as may be required by both local and international investors, provide data to other government agencies and departments, as well as assist researchers in the Nigerian automotive industry. He noted that the initial method of data collection, which was on-the-spot collection of data from stakeholders, distribution of questionnaires to stakeholders for completion and return to council, amongst others, suffered a severe setback. “Given the observed limitation, the Council examined the option of developing a secured platform on the World Wide Web for online registration by all stakeholders at their own convenience. “The platform configuration and content was developed between November 2006 and 2011 in consultant with several agencies, including Nigerian Automotive Manufacturers Association, Automotive Local Content Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Automotive Sector of Manufacturer Association of Nigeria, the Nigeria Police. “Other were the Federal Road Safety Corps, 22 states government Motor Vehicle Administration offices, Federal Inland Revenue Service, and Joint Tax Board, and the process was endorsed by the former National Council Industry 2009,” Mamudu added. He therefore, on behalf of the Council, recommended that the platform should be for registration by all, and expressed hope to work closely with stakeholders to ensure that it is populated with the necessary data to support the council’s effort in the transformation agenda.
